My Thoughts:

I'm not usually a reader of the fantasy genre-only because I lack the imagination it requires to get through a story.

When I was approached to review this book the big seller for me was the illustrations-I liked the fact that this fantasy novel had pictures. When I got it in the mail I was a little surprised by the length of 600 plus pages. But the story included 70 plus pages of black and white art work by the famous comic book illustratorr Geof Isherwood who has worked with Marvel Comics for years.

The story of Elliot grabbed me right away. He is a kid that is struggling with a move to a different city, a mom is is very sick and bully issues. I was on his side immediately as he tried to sort out his sadness and the situation he was in.

After exploring his grandfather's basement Elliott discovers a doorway to a different world called Pangrelor. A world that was very easy for me to picture thanks to the awesome illustrations. Pangrelor included creatures called greyfarers, serpans gimlets, susquatanians and darfoyles. I easily tell that some characters were inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien and well as C.S. Lewis.

But the story is not carried by Elliott alone. It also tells of a princess desperate to hold together a corrupt and crumbling kingdom, a susquatanian looking for redemption, and a serpan hell bent on revenge.

And then there's Elliott who brings them all together in a battle of the ages as he discovers that he has the powers to make or break a kingdom and possibly a world.

If I had to choose a favorite character from Antiquitas Lost I would have to say Elliott-and here's why. I loved Elliott through out the story simply because he didn't become a hero over night. He came into Pangrelor with fear and doubt. He struggles with the fact that he is a shamalan and what his role is suppose to be in this new, strange world. In a battle faced with roaring, fire breathing monsters and serpans welding deadly weapons-Elliott runs. I loved that about him!!

Elliott does grow and mature through out the story but it's not at a break neck speed. As the story came to an end I found that I didn't want to say goodbye to Elliott or this amazing new world called Pangrelor. I really enjoyed Antiquitas Lost and look forward to more written by Robert Louis Smith.

Smackdown: Pangrelor vs. Middle Earth

In 1954, J.R.R. Tolkien published the first of a breathtaking series of books that would go on to become some of the most influential novels of the 20th century. As anyone who has ever read The Lord of the Rings knows, Tolkien's books are so imaginative and unexpectedly powerful that his fantastic tale still captures our imaginations more than a half century after its original publication. These stories gave birth to the modern fantasy genre, and it is perhaps inevitable that so many contemporary fantasy books replicate aspects of Tolkien's writings. So pervasive is Tolkien's influence that the Oxford English Dictionary offers a word for it: Tolkienesque. Perhaps this is why we see so many fantasy tales that feature elves, dwarves, wizards, magic rings, and magic swords. The presence of these features is, in many ways, what we have come to expect from a modern fantasy novel.

But over the course of 57 years, these constructs of classical Northern European (or Tolkienesque) fantasy fiction have been imitated to the point of monotony. In tome after tome, we see elves and dwarves wielding magical swords or speaking in Northern European conlangs (fictional languages) as they follow some particular heroic quest. And let's be honest. Although there are many wonderful and imaginative novels that feature these elements, no one has done it as well as Mr. Tolkien.

When I sat down to write Antiquitas Lost, I promised myself there would be no magic rings, magic swords, elves or dwarves. A major goal was to create a fantasy novel where the creatures and setting were fresh. Pangrelor, the fantasy world described in Antiquitas Lost, is envisioned as a pre-industrial, medieval society with beautiful artistic accomplishments set in a savage and magical natural environment -- the Renaissance meets the Pleistocene, with magical beings and crypto-zoological creatures. Devoid of elves and dwarves, Pangrelor is inhabited largely by creatures that we are familiar with, but different from the usual fantasy fare -- gargoyles, Bigfoot creatures, Neanderthal types, Atlanteans and dinosaurs, to name a few. These differences give Pangrelor a much different feel from Middle Earth and the countless, adherent worlds that have followed. Hopefully the reader will find this refreshing. Over time, I have come to think of Antiquitas Lost as more of a "North American" tale, with many references to new world mythologies, as well as a hint of Native American influence.

Although Antiquitas Lost is not immune to Mr. Tolkien's sweeping influence, it is unique in many ways. When you take your first journey to Pangrelor, it is my sincere hope that you will experience a hint of the joy that accompanied your maiden voyage to Middle Earth, and that you will connect in a meaningful way with this unprecedented new cast of characters as you explore an altogether unique fantasy destination.

New Orleans Mansion.

This was the second illustration Geof drew, and he really wanted to capture the feel of the New Orleans Garden District, where chapter one takes place. He modeled the Antiquitas Lost mansion after an 1898 photo of an old New Orleans estate, and scouted the appearance of Garden District street corners by using images from Google Earth. As anyone familiar with New Orleans can see, he really captured its essence here. To the left, you can see the street sign for Pleasant Street, which was the New Orleans street where my wife and I were living when I began writing Antiquitas Lost.

Hooks in The Moment Before His Capture
The character, Hooks, depicted here, was one of the earliest Antiquitas Lost characters conceived. He remains one of my favorite characters. This chapter illustration was the first one Geof completed, and was the first time I really got to see what Hooks looked like on paper. Both Geof and I found this to be a powerful illustration, and it really got us excited for the scope of the artistic journey ahead. Geof found inspiration for this drawing in the works of the great Bernie Wrightson.

The Darfoyle, Ecsar
This is breathtaking. Depicted here is the Darfoyle, Ecsar, commander of the serpan legion that is preparing to storm the gimlet enclave of Scopulus. Darfoyles share remote biological origins with another species in Pangrelor, the grayfarers. Both are loosely based on gargoyles. As you might have gleaned from this illustration, these are some of Antiquitas Lost’s many bad guys. In the novel, the darfoyles are described as larger than grayfarers and darker in color. Unlike the grayfarers, darfoyles have tails. When Geof asked me to give him a feel for how I thought darfoyles might look on paper, I told him I thought they looked something like demons. Geof prepared for this drawing by creating a number of anatomic sketches focused on the musculature that would be needed to power the massive wings.

Slipher in The Temple
To me, this is one of the more iconic drawings in Antiquitas Lost. The character depicted is a runt serpan warrior named Slipher. While writing scenes with Slipher, I hoped to add dimension to serpan culture through this characters interactions with others and through his own inner dialogue. In this scene, Slipher, has just rifled the body of a dead gimlet priest in search of valuables. In the gimlet’s pocket, he finds a pipe and a mirror. As the story progresses, we learn that these items hold great importance, though Slipher is quite disappointed in them at the time.

Elliott and The Salax
For a variety of reasons, this is my favorite illustration in Antiquitas Lost. In this scene, Elliott (the protagonist) is awakened to find himself amid a swarm of bizarre, hopping creatures called salax. The location of this scene is the Forest of Golroc, which the reader soon learns is a place to be avoided at all costs. In creating the salax, my goal was to develop a dark, viscerally terrifying monster which we have never seen before, and something completely unique to Antiquitas Lost mythology. Among those who have read advance copies of Antiquitas Lost, the strange scenes that showcase the salax are always a favorite topic. After reading Antiquitas Lost, Geof was also intrigued by the salax, and he recognized they offered an opportunity to create something entirely new. While developing their appearance, he spent several days making sketches, and created several versions before settling on this one. When he sent me the pencil for this illustration, I remember grinning outright. I love that the creatures face is expressionless, and we only get a sense that something is terribly wrong by the look of fear and shock on Elliott’s face.

He began writing Antiquitas Lost in 2003 while studying at Tulane University in New Orleans.

My thoughts:

First let me say that I'm so excited that this is the first book of a trilogy. This book blew my mind. I stupidly picked it up the day after Christmas and everything in my house skidded to a halt. I couldn't put it down.

Saba's world is bleak. It's hot, miserable, and filled with dust. Saba's family has scratched out a living in Silverlake-which dried up long ago.

Saba's whole world is rocked the day four strangers show up and destroy her family and the only life she has ever known. Saba is left to pick up the pieces and find the strength to find the brother they took.

Saba travels down a dark and violent path to find Lugh and bring him home.

Saba is the most kick ass heroine I've met since Katniss of the Hunger Games. If both of them had to compete against each other I'm not sure who the winner would be.

The relationship that I found most interesting and emotionally raw was the often rocky relationship between Saba and her little sister Emmi. I also loved Jack. The inner battle that goes on with Saba concerning him was a roller coaster ride.

I can't wait for the sequel from this brilliant author. The characters grabbed hold of me and I can't wait to catch up with them again.

In an effort to save money for family vacation this year I am determined to get the majority of my reading material from the library. So I plan to save money AND support my local library!!!
And don't forget that most libraries have an ILL(Interlibrary Loaning) system so even if your local library doesn't have the book you want on the shelf they can borrow it from another library. My library doesn't even charge for this service!

I will go for 24 books from my library.

My thoughts:
I have never seen Cesar Millan's TV Show but picked up this book on the recommendation of a couple of friends who have two very well behaved dogs-one of them is a pure breed pit bull. They are huge believers in Cesar's training methods and educating dog owners.
I have a two year old Rottweiler and recently added a toy Poodle to our family. It makes for a lot of double takes at the dog park!
Since reading Cesar's Way I have found that I have more control over my dogs and feel like I'm doing a better job of being a "Pack Leader".
I love that he is about positive training. I can apply his methods to my 100 pound Rottweiler as well as my 5 pound Poodle. Although the are very different dogs on the outside-they both are dogs. The same rules and training apply.
The most helpful things I have taken from this book are:
1. Exercise is key for a happy and healthy dog.
2. The language of energy and how it applies to my dogs is invaluable.
3. This book is as much about people psychology as it is about dog psychology.
4. I'm more confident about my ability as a dog owner.
Anyone who is thinking about adding a dog to their family or improving their relationship with their dog should check this book out. I found the information easy to read and apply. I've already checked out another book by him-Leader of the Pack. I look forward to learning more.

The Dewey Decimal Challenge

I LOVE history. I'm a history nerd! So when I ran across this challenge being hosted by The Introverted Reader- I was so excited! I just checked out a book from the library- Catherine The Great. This will be the first book I read for this challenge. I will be going for "SEEKER" Hopefully I'll read more but I at least want to hit this goal.

Mug of Moxie enters the E-Reader World!

My sweet husband gave me a Nook for Christmas. For the first few days I didn't touch it-I've been a little hesitate to enter the e-reader world. I LOVE books. The feel of them. The smell of them. I find nothing more comforting than holding a hardback in my hands and escaping this world. I just didn't love the idea of reading a book on a machine. But so many people have raved about them and the convenience of having one at their finger tips. Well, who doesn't want convenience?

Two weeks after Christmas I can honestly say-I LOVE MY NOOK!!

The volcanic turbulence that shakes Dael's mind carries him to vicious extremes. It is Zan's task to calm his brother and lead him away from thought both destructive and self-destructive. But even the paradise of the Beautiful Country will not erase them.
My thoughts:
This book is the second in a trilogy by author Shickman. The first one being Zan-Gah A Prehistoric Adventure which introduces us to Zan and his troubled brother Dael. Twin brothers born in prehistoric times where life comes down to surviving the elements and finding food. Zan is raised with his tribe and becomes a like and well respected member. Dael on the other hand is kidnapped by a warring tribe and raised with abuse and hatred. At the end of Zan-Gah A Prehistoric Adventure Zan rescues Dael and brings him back to his family and tribe. And this is where Zan-Gah and the Beautiful Country picks up.
Right away I was swept back into the tale of Zan and Dael. These characters are ones that stay with you long after you have finished the book.
Even though Dael is now back with his tribe and family all is not right with him. He finds love and marries but his wife dies in childbirth. More tragedy for Dael to deal with. The years of captivity have taken a toll on his heart and mind. He is unable to let go of the hatred he feels for the tribe that stole his life from him. He wants revenge more then anything and is determined that his brother Zan should go with him back to The Beautiful Country and that the lives of his tormentors and their land also.
Reluctantly Zan who is now the leader of the tribe agrees to move his people to the Beautiful Land in hopes of finding a better life for them and Dael.
Throughout the story Dael continues to wrestle the demons inside himself. As a reader you pity him but struggle to like him despite his hardships. Such a complicated, complex character!
Zan is a good man who puts his tribe and brothers needs ahead of his own. He wants Dael to find happiness but not at the cost of the tribe and their well being.
This story has adventure and heart.
I donated Zan Gah A Prehistorical Adventure to my local middle school library. I plan to do the same with this book. It's my hope that it finds its way into the hands of kids wanting a story that is action packed and memorable.
I can't wait to pick the next title in the series Dael and the Painted People.

But they don't realize there is more to Incarceron than meets the eye. Escape will take their greatest courage and cost far more than they know.
Because Incarceron is alive.
My thoughts:
I admit it. I picked this book up totally based on the reviews of other book bloggers. They raved-so I had to check it out. If I had read the inside cover first I probably would have not given it a chance. The plot just sounds too weird for me- I struggle with Fantasy.
The "IT" Factor-The Characters
The characters captured my attention right away. Finn and Claudia both have strong personalities so different yet the same-desperate to escape their situations. He in on the Inside and she is on the Outside. Escape is their highest priority. His from the prison-hers from a loveless marriage.
Finn's relationship with his oath brother, Keiro is complex and at times confusing. As is Claudia's relationship to her father. Does he love Claudia or is she just a bargaining chip? Wow!
The "ICK" Factor-The Prison
Incarceron is alive. A society decides to lock away the bad guys. They lock em up and throw away the key. People forget about Incarceron. Centuries pass and life goes on. Eventually the prison come to life-becomes a living, breathing thing. WTF? I just couldn't get into it.
Would I recommend to other readers?
Yes!
Undoubtedly other readers have the imagination for the parts I struggled with and would very much enjoy the entire story.
The sequel to Incarceron is called Sapphique and I will definitely read it. Incarceron leaves the reader on a cliff hanger and I really want to know what happens to the characters that I've grown to know and love.

My Thoughts:
A Middle School Librarian asked me to preview this book before putting it on the shelf for her students. Purple Heart is a book I would have totally judged by it's cover and passed it over. I don't normally seek out books about war. I'm so very glad I had the opportunity to read Purple Heart and experience Patricia McCormick's amazing story.
Purple Heart gives you a chance to experience the War in Iraq from a soldier's point of view. It's not pretty. Matt is laying in a hospital bed with a traumatic brain injury. As Matt lays there recovering he tries to piece together the moments he and a fellow soldier were caught in cross fire and a young boy was killed. We are with Matt as certain truths are revealed and the chain of events leading up to the explosion start to become more clear to him. Soon he is back in the field with his squad-but can he still trust them and can he still protect them. Everything is different and he is changed. He still needs to know what happened to this little boy and if he was the cause of his death. He can't move forward until he finds answers.
Matt is a very likable character and very soon you find yourself rooting for him and his quest for truth.
I loved having a first hand look into the Iraqi War, The soldiers and The civilians. It gave me better understanding into the relationships that have been built between the Iraqi people and soldiers and the politics that rule both their worlds.
My 16 yr old saw me reading this book and became interested in reading it for his English class. Hopefully he enjoys it as mush as I did.

A few years ago, I had the privilege of working on an unusual peace demonstration─one that united Vietnam vets with recent veterans from the war in Iraq and old-fashioned peaceniks. These unlikely groups were brought together by the American Friends Service Committee, the Quakers.
As a group, we arranged more than 3,600 pairs of combat boots, each one tagged with the name of a soldier who'd died in Iraq or Afghanistan, in a display that was meant to symbolize the real human cost of the war. Nearby, we laid out a pile of civilian shoes to symbolize the uncounted men, women and children who'd died in Iraq.
One pair of shoes caught my eye. It was a pair of sneakers, just the right size for a ten-year-old boy. I instantly saw that boy being shot in the chest, his small body flung into the air from the force of the blast. As much as I tried to forget such a horrific image, I couldn't. And so I spent the next few years imagining how such a thing could happen.
Purple Heart is a fictionalized look at that death, and how two young American soldiers may or may not have been involved in it. It isn't an anti-war book. It isn't a pro-war book. It's an attempt to portray how three children─two eighteen-year-old Americans and a ten-year-old Iraqi boy─have been affected by war.
It's estimated that more than 650,000 civilians have died in Iraq. Because this war has been fought in cities, in and amongst families, civilian fatalities have become the "signature" of this conflict─causing profound moral conflicts for soldiers and profound losses for those families.
I finished this book with as many questions as I had when I started. I came away with a deepened respect for our soldiers, a better appreciation of life in a war zone, and a strengthened commitment to peace. My hope is that readers will, too.

My thoughts:
Prophecy of the Sisters is a dark fantasy filled with magic and mystery. It's the first book in a planned trilogy. The book opens with the Milthrope children standing in the rain at their father's funeral. All the more tragic because their mother died a few years earlier which now leaves them orphans and in the care of an aunt.
Shortly after her father's death Lia develops a strange mark on her wrist. In addition to strange and terrifying dreams she also notices that her twin is acting cold and distant. Soon an old book is discovered and it's revealed that Lia and Alice are part of an ancient battle that puts the sisters on opposing sides. One sister shall be the guardian of the gate-a protector while the other shall be the gateway to the Apocalypse-which will bring death and destruction.
A few twists and turns keep the reader on their toes as the story reveals more secrets.
I look forward to more character development with Lia's friends' Sophia and Luisa. I'm also interested in seeing where the relationship with Jame and Lia go. But what I'm really hoping for is a deeper look into Alice and her mind. Hopefully that will happen in the next book-Guardian of the Gate.
I enjoyed this story. The plot was engrossing and the characters were interesting. I will buy the next book in the trilogy to see where this tale takes me.

I am clanless. I wasted the last weeks of August watching bad cartoons. I didn't go to the mall, the lake, or the pool, or answer the phone.I have entered high school with the wrong hair, the wrong clothes, the wrong attitude. And I don't have anyone to sit with.
From her first moment at Merryweather High, Melinda Sordino knows she an outcast. She busted an end of the summer party by calling the cops-a major infraction in high school society-so her old friends won't talk to her, and the people she doesn't know glare at her. She retreats into her head, where the lies and hypocrisies of high school stand in stark relief to her own silence,making her all the more mute. But it's not so comfortable in her head, either-there's something banging around in there that she doesn't want to think about. Try as she might to avoid it, it won't go away, until there is a painful confrontation. Once that happens, she can't be silent-she must speak the truth.
My thoughts:
I really wanted to read a challenged book for Banned Book Week but was having a hard time deciding which one. I was subbing at our middle school library and much to my surprise saw this book on the shelf. So I guess you could say the book choose me.
Melinda is a 9th grader going into high school. A scary event without drama. But during the summer while Melinda was at a party she was involved in a situation and called the cops. We the reader are left in the dark for most of the story as to exactly what transpired but we know the Melinda has been emotionally damaged and lost all of her friends. Her depression and isolation is heart breaking. What I found most frustrating was her parents and their lack of reaction to her drastic mood and personality change. Thank goodness Melinda finds a way to deal with her hurt and grief through an art class and a perceptive teacher.
This book belongs in school libraries and public libraries. Parents should be reading this book with their daughters. It's true to life and could prove to be helpful in social situations.
I am overjoyed that it's in our middle school library and I hope many girls check it out and take something away from Melinda's story.

R.I.P. VI Challenge-Movie

The Last Exorcism was watched as part of the R.I.P. VI Challenge-hosted by Stainless Steel Droppings. This is my review. Southern minister Reverend Cotton Marcus recruits a documentary film crew to help him set the record straight. For years he's been conning people and he's ready to come clean.
He recently received a letter from a desperate man who is convinced the devil as taken possession of his daughter, Nell. Reverend Marcus prepares to shoot the final exorcism of his career revealing the tricks of the trade that he has used on faithful and desperate people during his career.
The reverend performs the fake exorcism, all while sharing his secrets with the camera and the crew. The whole act includes wires that shock, recorded sounds and smoking crosses.
But as Marcus and the film crew prepare to leave not all seems right-Is it possible that this possession is real and that Satan is not ready to let go of Nell or Marcus?
I really enjoyed the mockumentary style of this film. The shaky, slow to focus camera shots remind me of The Blair Witch Project and in my opinion amp of the suspense of the film. The Reverend is a snake oil salesman in a white linen suit. You don't want to like Cotton Marcus but yet he sells you on his charm-he's regretful, yet arrogant. You are buying what he is selling even though you know he's a phony!
The film is creepy with enough twists and turns to keep the viewer on their toes. PG-13 means that it could be fun for the whole family.
Of course there are going to be comparisons to The Exorcist-UNFAIR! There will never be or can be another Exorcist....let it go!
That completes my review of The Last Exorcism.

I think that we are all in agreement that the choice to read a book should be a freedom not tampered with. I believe that parents should be aware of what their children are reading, watching and playing. It's the responsibility of a parent to be involved-books can open the door to communication and education. If my daughter brings home a book that is too mature to read as a parent I have the right to take that book away from her-BUT I do not have the right to take that book out of the hands of YOUR child. That is your job.

I LOVE Banned Book Week and I love that we have a place to celebrate our freedom to read.

Mug of Moxie is giving away a copy of Fallout by Ellen Hopkins. She is an author that I admire and support. Her books have been banned in school and public libraries across America. The subjects she writes about: drug abuse, prostitution and incest are not easy topics. Her stories are honest, raw and emotional. I believe that her stories can educate, inspire and have the power to change someone's life.
Do I want my 8 year old daughter to read this book? No, not yet. But in a few years-YES! I would encourage her to read it and then we can talk about it. This is what books are meant to do-educate so we can communicate.
If this book will help her see the ugly reality of drugs and the effect that it has on lives....if it stops her from experimenting with meth...if it keeps her safe... I will personally put it on her night stand and NO ONE better mess with our choice to make that decision. I support and celebrate the freedom to read.

My thoughts:
Main character Matt is the clone of a powerful drug lord, El Patron. Matt is born into a time when rich and wealthy men harvest organs of clones to prolong their lives. El Patron has lived to be 140 years old with the help of transplants. It's perfectly legal and clones are considered no better than cattle. Usually clones have their intelligence destroyed at birth but El Patron decides to give Matt a normal upbringing and entrusts his care to a loyal servant named Celia. Matt submerges himself in music, excels in math and learns everything about the business he believes that he will eventually run. As Matt grows up he faces the hatred and prejudices people have of clones and eejits.Truths of why he exists are slowly revealed and the horror of his situation comes to light. Escape becomes his only option.
Matt is a character full of hope and courage as he tries to figure out who he is in spite of why he was created. A fast paced story that takes the reader on a journey with Matt from the moment of his conception and up into his teen years.
Because so much has happened with stem cell research, immigration and cloning in the last few years I think that this book would be an excellent one for a class discussion or a great book club choice. There are many moral choices the characters in the story face.
I chose this book as the kick off to the R.I.P. Challenge. It came highly recommended to me by teens when I worked at the public library. After finishing the book I struggled to categorize this novel- Is it science fiction or dystopian? Maybe it's a mystery? It also had the elements of suspense and horror throughout. I'm not really sure which category The House of the Scorpion falls into is my point. Maybe it's just one of those books that can't be put into one genre and should be enjoyed for what it is-a really good read.
I borrowed this book from the Salmon Public Library. I would recommend this to readers 12 and up.

My Thoughts:
Author Joelle Anthony has created a different dystopian novel. Main character, Molly is not from a dark, bleak, and hopeless world. In fact, she lives a pretty good life on a tiny Canadian Island with her family that has created an independent, thriving community. The year is 2041 and unfortunately the rest of the world hasn't fared as well. Oil is almost a thing of the past and crime rules the streets. People have to fight for food, fuel and medicine.
Molly is forced to leave the security of the island and her family and travel to the United States to rescue her grandparents. Due to circumstances the responsibility falls on her young shoulders. This desolate, crime ridden world is new and frightening to Molly who to this point has lived a very sheltered life. Luckily she is a strong, determined girl set on finding her grandparents and returning home to the place she loves.
This book is part dystopian and adventure with a pinch of romance thrown in. Restoring Harmony is a great story that will have you rooting for Molly from start to finish. A very enjoyable read.
I will be donating this book to my local Middle School Library.

My thoughts:
I'm not going to lie. I'm a sucker for a good zombie book. I love them! Jonathan Maberry has created something new and fresh-a zombie tale with emotion. After a series of failed jobs Benny has no choice but to work as his brother's apprentice in the family business as a bounty hunter-killing zoms or lose his food rations. Brother relationships are never easy but throw an unforgotten First Night(the night the world changed and 6 billion people died and came back from the dead) memory- In which Benny remembers being pulled from his screaming mother's arms by his older brother Tom. He remembers Tom running away and leaving his mother to die at the hands of a zombie. Benny resents Tom and thinks him a coward.
From the beginning-it's a complex relationship. Tom is both older brother and main caregiver, he's also very aware of Benny's feelings toward him. Benny is a typical teenager, trying to figure out who and what he wants to be-growing up in a untypical situation. Both are stubborn and hard headed which keeps them alive while hunting zoms in The Rot and Ruin. Through main characters Benny and Tom we are given a completely new look at zombies and the people they once were.
I never thought that I would read a story that would make me boo hoo over a mindless, wandering, flesh eater but there I was. Unbelievable! There are so many layers to this story. Maberry tells a coming of age story with action, horror, violence and love.
I can hardly wait to get my hands on the sequel Dust and Decay. I need to know what happens to Benny and Tom-where does there story go from here? I know I won't be bored!

My thoughts:

I LOVE the cover!! It draws you in and begs to be picked up. It's absolutely perfect for the story.

The Dust of 100 Dogs was such an unusual tale to say the least. I admit that I struggled to write a review for lack of the right words. I love stories about pirates-Bloody Jack comes to mind. As well as stories about reincarnation-remember Audrey anyone? A.S. King has put the two together and created an amazing story.

Main character Emer Morrisey is born during the 1600s in Ireland and lives an eventful life. After being reunited with her one and only true love she dies tragically, but not before burying a treasure chest full of jewels and gold in a secret location. Don't worry-I haven't disclosed details to ruin the story for you, this all happens in the first chapter of the book! As Emer is dying another pirate hell bent on revenge curses her to a life of 100 dogs. So A.S.King includes little snippets of Emer's different dog lives sprinkled through out the story. Genius! It helps the reader remember the curse. Eventually Emer completes the curse and lives the life of the 100th dog. She now is reincarnated as Saffron Adams during the 1970s in Pennsylvania. Saffron/Emer is born with all of her memories. She remembers her previous life as a pirate and her precious treasure buried along the coast of Jamaica. She is determined to get there and claim her riches. What she doesn't count on is the dysfunctional family she is born into and the trials of being an American teenager.

I loved this book and can't wait to get my hands on something else that A.S.King has written. Reader be warned there are parts of this book that are violent-after all Emer/Saffron is a pirate. Some scenes may affect a weak stomach.

My thoughts:
Finding a dead body in a walk in freezer is not a good way to start the day. But things go from bad to worse when Oz's big brother and head chef is accused of murder and thrown in jail. Suddenly it's up to Oz to get to the bottom of the crime and fast because police are starting to look at him as a possible accomplice.
Cold Case is a sharp, engaging, detective mystery perfect for middle school readers, as well as older readers. Main character Oz feels like the real deal as he struggles with a complicated family history, frustrations with his older brother and fear that his mom may lose their family business. He was easy to root for as the story took some unexpected twists and turns as the plot thickened and the list of suspects grew.
I enjoyed that the story was from Oz's point of view but the other characters were also interesting-his best friend Rusty added a touch of humor and excitement to the story.
I would definitely follow Oz on another adventure if he ever stumbles upon a dead body again!

My thoughts:
What might have been a typical new girl moves to town and feels like an outsider story turns out to be anything but. Author Wendy Delsol weaves an engaging tale of magic, mystery and romance.
Katla's honesty and sense of humor make her immediately likable and her strong character traits carry her through the story. Instead of sitting in a heap of "poor me" she tries to make the best of a hard situation. Moving to a new town, making new friends, and trying to be supportive to her mom who is divorcing her dad.
When it is revealed that Katla's destiny includes membership to the Icelandic Stork Society with a bunch of older strange women, Katla, once again steps up with humor intact.
I loved that Katla was so strong through out the story-she is thrown into many new and unfamilar things but makes the best of it. She never becomes a blubbering, crying, "why me" mess.
I thought that Stork was a good, solid read. A interesting, fresh plot that includes Norse Mythology and a little Hans Christan Anderson. I was excited to see that the sequel Frost will be released October 11th. I can't wait! I'm hoping there will be some more information and history on the Icelandic Stork Society. And I can't wait to see if Katla's role in the society will develop, not to mention the other things she has going on in her life.

My thoughts:
The cover and the tag line captured me. The photo of the girl is just breathtaking. White dress and red ribbon. It stopped me in my tracks and I want to read more. Then in the corner, just a simple line: Secrets never stay below the surface. DONE! Goosebumps! I'm buying the book-I NEED to know more. Genius!
Now the story-Two words come to mind. Complicated and intriguing. The relationship between Chloe and Ruby is complex. Ruby is a free spirit who has raised Chloe with no help from their drunken mother. Chloe is the little sister who adores who older sister. Ruby can do no wrong in her eyes. Sister relationships are never easy. Now throw in a dead body, a creepy reservoir and a secretive town.
I went into this story with no expectations. Later I discovered the divided reviews on Amazon. Some people loved the story and some didn't.
Nova Ren Suma has built a beautiful tale that twists the loyalty of sisters in with suspense and mystery. Page by page the layers of the mystery are peeled back and the truth of that fateful night and Ruby are slowly revealed. Chloe and the reader are kept in suspense until Ruby is ready to reveal truths. By the end of the story I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I needed to know what happened that night and if it was fixable.
I think that Imaginary Girls is a beautiful ghost story. It leaves the reader with a few unanswered questions and haunting characters-as good ghost stories should.
I received this ARC as part of Good Golly Miss Holly ARC Tours. I'll be sending it on to the next reader in line. Thanks to Holly for giving me the chance to read and review this fantastic book.

My thoughts:
Let me first say that I'm a HUGE fan of the televised Dexter on Showtime. Michael C. Hall is pure genius as Dexter. If you haven't seen the show go immediately to the nearest video store and rent the first season. It will blow your socks off. Be warned it's a bit bloody-he's a serial killer people! Which brings us to the reason why I picked up the book in the first place. I was curious to know if the show is following the books or has gone in a different direction with the character of Dexter. After reading the first book I discovered that the show has made a few changes which has made me even more anxious to read the second book-Dearly Devoted Dexter! So I predict that it will be a summer filled Dexter. That's fine with me because I'm still waiting for the 5th season to come out on DVD. You see I can't watch it on TV like normal people-I have to watch episode after episode all at one time because I'm impatient by nature. I can't stand the suspense of waiting week to week to see what Dexter is going to do next.
Back to the book.
Dexter was adopted by a police detective named Harry who knew the details of how Dexter came to be orphaned. Harry recognizes at an early age that Dexter is "different" thus introduces him to the Code of Harry. Dexter is a sociopath who is incapable of feeling human emotions but has the urge to kill. Harry makes sure that Dexter channels these feelings and rid the world of criminals-people who kill people. Dexter's job as a blood spatter expert helps him find the killers and take care of them. Dexter is mostly just trying to fit in with society by mostly winging it. Whether it comes to his foster sister Deborah who also works at the police station or a blind date that he knows he should have to seem normal. His observations of human behavior are hilarious. Dexter narrates the story so it gives the reader a great perspective into his crazy world. Although you are completely aware that Dexter kills people as a hobby the author Jeff Lindsay makes it impossible not to like the guy. It's incredibly twisted awesomeness!
Would I recommend this book to a friend:
Damn right! But only the ones that don't mind blood and the occasional f-bomb thrown around. Not to mention a lot of violence.

My Thoughts:
Lately I don't veer very far from Young Adult but sometimes a book catches my attention and I have to check it out. I won this little jewel in a contest some time ago and finally plucked it from my towering TBR pile. The clever title had me cracking up right away-looking for a few light hearted laughs I read the first few pages.
HOOKED!
This is how I picture Buffy the vampire slayer in her later years. A busy mom with too many irons in the fire. Reluctantly fighting a few pesky demons who show up on her doorstep all while keeping the husband happy, feeding her children well balanced meals and making sure that her house is clean.
Of course there's way more to the story. Demons just don't show up without a reason. Poor Kate doesn't have the help of Nyles, the crusty British librarian but she does have a awesome best friend named Laura who is ready and willing.
This book is the first in a series by Julie Kenner. I will be reading the second installment-California Demon. I can hardly wait to see what happens to Kate and side kick Laura next.
If you were ever a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer you will love this book. Even if you weren't and your looking for a quick easy read with a few giggles give it a shot.
It's a great summer read.

My thoughts:
This is the first book in a series written by the award winning Australian author John Marsden. A apocalyptic adventure filled with suspense page after page. This book brought back many memories of a movie I saw as a teenager called Red Dawn starring the swoon worthy Patrick Swayze back in the day.
This story is told from Ellie's viewpoint who at the beginning explains that she's been chosen by the group to keep a journal of what has happened to them since their country was invaded. Unexpected war forces this group of rag tag teenagers to grow up real fast and make decisions that will not only affect their futures but also the adults being held hostages by their invaders.
A female narrator brings great emotion to a story that could have easily just been an action one.
What I didn't like about this book:
I don't care for this version of the cover. You honestly can't tell by looking at it what the story is even about. I like the paperback version that shows helicopters in the twilight. It's more fitting for the title and story.
Would I recommend this book to a friend:
YES! I think boys and girls alike age 12 and up would love this story. My son actually read this book first for an English project. He's not a big reader and couldn't stop talking about it. That's when I knew I had to pick it up and check it out for myself. No regrets. In fact, I can't wait to jump into the next book called The Dead of Night.

My thoughts:
This science fiction thriller is set 200 years into the future. A comet has swept by Earth leaving deadly particles behind that are killing adults. Mankind's future lays in the hands of 251 teenagers that have agreed to man a space shuttle and travel to the great unknown. What a premise!
The Comet's Curse is the first book in a planned six part series. The story wastes no time introducing us to a cast of characters we are sure to hear more about in books to follow. The constant shifts of viewpoints from the crew as well as the scientists in charge of the project keep the story interesting and fresh.
My favorite character in this story was actually the computer on board of the Galahad named Roc. His sense of humor and opinions added some lightness to the suspense. I believe his character will continue to develop in upcoming stories and it will be interesting to see what role he plays in the lives of the 251 teenage crew members.
Would I recommend this story to a friend:
Absolutely! I think this book would be very popular to both boys and girls in a middle school library as well as older kids. A good clean read.

My Thoughts:
The cover and the title are what grabbed my attention and made me want to read Daelyn's story.
This book made me want to scream out loud in anger and frustration. This is what bullying does! It tears someone down piece by piece and destroys who they are on the inside and out. My heart ached as Daelyn recounts tale after tale the acts of bullying that start when she first starts school and continues to present day. Daelyn is a girl who is desperately trying to disconnect from everyone and everything so her feelings and emotions can no longer hurt her.
By the Time You Read This I'll be Dead is an honest book that pulls no punches as Daelyn searches for ways to end her life and tells of previous failed attempts. There were times I felt sick to my stomach-the facts are brutal.
I loved the character of Santana. He brings a ray of hope into the story as he reaches out to Daelyn. He has his own troubled history but longs to connect to another person.
As I read Daelyn's story I found myself hoping and praying that she wouldn't give up and find just one reason to not give up and keep on living.
Would I recommend this book to a friend?
Yes. But I would caution them of the graphic details of suicide. Libraries should have this book. The bullying situations that happen to Daelyn are not unique or unusual. They happen and we need to talk about it with our youth. Their actions good or bad can affect the life of someone in a positive or negative way.

My thoughts:
CREEPY! There are parts of this book that literally made the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up. YIKES!
Main character Alex has been thrown into something beyond his wildest nightmares-a juvenile center called The Furnace. Somehow, he must survive and escape the furnace before the giants in black suits make a visit to his cell. He's not sure where they take the kids after the visits but he does know that something beyond horrible happens to them and they are changed, it's possible that those kids may not even be human anymore. His only chance at survival is escape-but no one as ever done that before. Is it even possible?
This book leads right into the sequel- Solitary. Which of course I have to purchase because I HAVE to find out what happen to Alex and crew.
Would I recommend this book to a friend?
Yes, with the warning to not read late at night, make sure you are not alone in the house, and keep a few lights on for heaven's sake.

My thoughts:
Let me say first that I have not read the Mortal Instrument Series. I was a little concerned that this story would be connected to the series and I wouldn't understand the parts of the plot-but thankfully that wasn't the case. I was hooked from the first page. The characters were engaging and interesting from the start. This magical fantasy contains vampires, demons and warlocks. Boredom is not a problem with the twists and turns that take place throughout this tale of suspense. The setting is London during the Victorian Age, I was fascinated by the descriptions of places and people. It was so easy to get lost in the story. Clockwork Angel is my first experience with writer Cassandra Clare and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in The Infernal Devices Series-Clockwork Prince which will be released in December.
Would I recommend this book to a friend:
Without a doubt! I Loved it!

Hip-hop artist Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will write a semi-autobiographical novel called Playground. The young-adult book stars “a thirteen-year-old schoolyard bully who finds redemption as he faces what he’s done.”
Penguin Group (USA)’s Razorbill imprint will release the title in January 2012. Laura Arnold will edit the book. Agency Group agent Marc Gerald brokered the deal.
The rapper (pictured, via) had this statement: “I wanted to explore how a kid becomes a bully. I drew on events from my own childhood and adolescence, but was excited to see the story take on its own life. This book would have been very helpful for me growing up and now that I have a teenage son, it is my goal that this will have a positive influence on all teenagers.”

My thoughts:
I wanted to LOVE this book.
I'm a fan of Megan McCafferty's Jessica Darling series and I was really excited to read another dystopia novel(a genre I can't get enough of) by an author I think is great. Unfortunately Bumped did not meet the expectation I set up for it.
What I loved about the book:
The cover immediately caught my attention and I think it ties in perfectly to the story line. The eggs of teenagers are precious things in the future.
I loved the character Zen-Melody's best friend and possible love interest. But I would have loved to know more about him.
What I disliked about the book:
The undeveloped characters bothered me. I know that the author is probably waiting for the sequel to reveal more about the character's past but the lack of information in this book left me feeling no connection with them in this book.
The absence of Melody's parents. They were on vacation the entire book which seemed odd because of the huge life changes happening in their daughter's life. Plus I think their POV would have added to the story line and helped us understand the dystopia world that McCafferty created.
The slang was just annoying. I feel that it distracted from the story rather than enhancing it.
The ending drove me crazy. McCafferty literally leaves us hanging, making us wait for the sequel that she obviously plans to write.
Would I recommend this book to friends:
Yes I would. But I would suggest that they save their money and borrow it from the library or a friend.

This book promises romance, heartbreak, martial arts, cannibalism, and armies of shambling corpses. It deliveries! I have loved these books published by Quirk Classics. The first one that hooked me was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, next I read the prequel Dawn of the Dreadfuls. Now comes the exciting conclusion to the trilogy Dreadfully Ever After. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read and review Dawn of the Dreadfuls by Steven Hockensmith. It's the perfect recipe of genre mash up. Take a classic story(by Jane Austen) add a cup of gore, 3 tablespoons of humor, sprinkle in ninjas and an evil aunt(by genius Steven Hockensmith) and bake to 350 degrees for a yummy yet satisfying treat. The result is a perfect, magical blend of awesome story telling.
What I loved about this story:
I found myself easily caught up in the complicated relationship between the newly married Elizabeth Bennett who dearly misses the satisfaction of a good zombie kill. Alas, it is forbidden for a married woman to participate in such unladylike activities. When her husband is bitten by a dreadful she takes matters into her own hands and save him even if it includes doing unladylike things. Hilarious!
Would I recommend this book to friends:
Yes! And I would also strongly urge them to read other Quirk classics like Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, Android Karenina and The Meowmorphosis.

My Thoughts:
This was a cute, quick book with a great message.
Jess is starting her sophomore year of high school. Over the summer she developed a love for sewing and audio books. Unfortunately her long time best friends are going in a different direction. Jess finds herself at a place where she can choose to be follower and keep the friends she has always had-even if it means sacrificing her new found interests. Or she can choose to hang out with a new group of people and step out of her comfort zone.
What I loved about this book:
I could very much relate to what Jess was going through. I think anyone who survived that evil thing called High School can relate to this story. We out grow friends, find new interests and sometimes have to make some tough choices of which direction we want to go. When is it time to leave the friends that aren't traveling the same path behind?
What I disliked about this book:
I can't think of anything off the top of my head.
Would I recommend this book to friends:
Yes! Especially friends with daughters! Like I said before it's a very relate able story for teens and adults.
There are a few mature themes that include oral sex and STDs which I think would give a mom and daughter an opportunity to talk about these subjects.
I will definitely be on the look out for more books by Julie Halpern.

My thoughts:
This story is a fast furious ride. Make sure your seat belt is fastened because it's one hair pin turn after another.I finished it at 2am because I couldn't put it down.
What I liked about the book:
This is the first line on the first page.
"Simon Glass was easy to hate. I never knew exactly why, there was too much to pick from. I guess, really, we each hated him for a different reason, but we didn't realize it until the day we killed him".
With an opener like that you know it's going to be an intense story. And it doesn't disappoint.
Also I liked the quotes given from teachers, parents, classmates and cops at the beginning of each chapter. Their point of views offered gave added suspense and insight into an already disturbing story.
What I disliked about book:
Nothing. I thought it was amazing. Read it immediately!
Author's Insight:
Gail Giles tells the following story. "As a substitute teacher, twenty five years ago, I overheard three popular girls telling a nerd he was "coming along" but would need a "seminar". They had gotten to know him in class and had decided he was too nice and smart to continue being an outsider. "Seminar" meant a trip to the mall to get his hair styled and do some clothes shopping.
That started me thinking. What if one of the girls had a darker agenda? What if the nerd had to be sacrificed in order for someone else to get power? Why would someone need power so badly? Shattering Glass grew out of these questions."
Would I recommend this book to friends:
My son actually recommended this book to me. He read it for book report.
He couldn't put it down and upon finishing it asked me to find more books by Gail Giles. If you knew how much my son hates to read you too would believe in Christmas miracles in June!

My thoughts:
Why?
That is the big question that the ones left behind are left to try to answer.
So many are touched by the tragedy of suicide.
It's a tough topic that is handled well by Courtney Summers.
What I loved about this book:
Courtney Summer had created an amazing character with Eddie. She is so easy to relate to-her anger, sadness, and confusion felt so real at times it was painful to read. The rawness of Eddie's grief goes right to the heart and stays there from beginning to end. I've read quite a few mixed reviews on this book and have come to the conclusion that either you will love it or hate it. I'm not sure there is an in between.
What I didn't care for:
I think that the summary and information about Fall For Anything sets the reader up to expect a BIG twist in the story. Based on the twists and turns of other books I have read by Courtney Summers I think I was expecting the story to take a way more darker tone when the character of Culler is introduced to the story.
Although it's a great story I found myself disappointed by the BIG finish-I won't spoil anything here for people who haven't read the book. Aside from that I thought Fall For Anything was a great story.
Would I recommend this story to friends:
Absolutely! But I would warn them that there is some harsh language. And some intense moments that deal with grief.
Probably what I loved the most about this story is that we-the readers get to see Eddie as well as her mom progress through the stages of grief. We see Eddie grow, find hope and maybe peace.
Sometimes there are no answers in suicide and all we are left with are the whys. I would recommend this story to anyone-teen or adult who has dealt with suicide on any level.

I definitely didn't do as well as I wanted to with the challenge but I did finish two books-
Fall for Anything by Courtney Summers
Shattering Glass by Gail Giles
Both were excellent books which I'll be writing reviews for in the next day or two.
I also started Mockingjay by Susanne Collins today and made it to almost the halfway mark.

48 HBC UPDATE
24 HOURS and counting.....
I have started Shattering Glass by Gail Giles and it's already intense. I can't wait to devote more time to it tonight now that kids are in bed and house is clean. I'm going to read for a couple of hours tonite then read as much I can before my family arrives from Boise tomorrow. Then we'll see how the rest of the day goes.
I did get the chance to visit 30 fellow bloggers that are braving the 48HBC-bringing my networking time to 4 1/2 hours. More than my reading time at this point. But it was fun to read what other people are reading and how they are pacing themselves.

After sending son off to basketball tournament picked book to start with. Started 48 HBC at approx. 8:30am Friday morning.
I'm currently reading Fall For Anything by Courtney Summers

I'm probably getting in way over my head but i have a stack of books just screaming to be read. Husband and teen are at a basketball tourny. I'm taking a quick trip to video store for some childre's DVDs for the 8 yr. old and quick stop to Corner Store for a six pack of Coke for me. I'm doing it! My Thoughts:
Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven is one of the best books I have read this year. I bought it used from Amazon for $1.00 about a month ago after reading a great review. It's a book you will read and then want to talk about. I immediately loaned it to a friend who was traveling to Ireland knowing she would need a good book for the flight. She also loved it.
The experiences that Susan and Claire have are amazing, horrific, and hilarious. A roller coaster of emotion. I literally couldn't put the book down, sitting it on the bathroom counter to brush my teeth or fix dinner. Yes! It's that good! If you are looking for THE summertime read I recommend that you pick this one up immediately. Don't forget to drop me a line and tell me what you thought!
I plan to get another book she wrote called Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress as soon as possible.

I'm Tammy from Mug of Moxie. I blog mostly YA. I'm from a small town in Idaho. No book stores! Thankfully we have a great public library. And I do buy alot of used books from Amazon. I started blogging a couple of years ago with the intention of reviewing YA books for the pubic library I worked for. What started as a job turned into a love for YA. With blogging I discovered a whole world of people that love reading and talking about books as much as I do! I now work for a school district and blog in my spare time. Trending now in a BIG way.... Fairy Tales! They are no longer just in books or on the big screen. This Fall in addition to Once Upon A Time I saw a preview for The Brothers Grimm. Check it out. This trailer had me on the edge of my seat. YIKES! Suddenly TV looks interesting again.

FAIRY TALES!!
It's time to jump on the fairy tale band wagon!
First there was Red Riding Hood and Beastly on the big screen. Rumors of the movie versions of Snow White and Hansel and Gretal are floating around.
Now ads for a new series coming this Fall -Once Upon A Time.
The trailer is on youtube and actually looks promising. I'll be tuning in to check it out.
